Petit Collage elephant mirror

You can rely on Petit Collage for consistently high-quality design. When you click on the 'about' tab, you understand why - it's all the work of Lorena Siminovich, artist/illustrator turned designer.
This elephant mirror is a perfect example. I love the way the elephant emerges from such simple shapes, including the teardrop and circle cutaways that create the negative space. Just perfect for a baby's room (it's acrylic too, so no need to worry about breakage).

Great Goose!

I think part of the reason I had kids was so I could legitimately indulge my love of all things farm: sheep, bunnies, ducks and particularly, GEESE!
So, OOOOOO, am I drooling over this exquisite, felted, wool, goose puppet! It's so expressive! So beautifully rendered! So cuuute! Part of a fantastic menagerie of hand crafted critters by Hungarian artist Klara, it's definitely an heirloom piece. What a wonderful way to engage your child's imagination (not to mention your goose fetish) for generations to come.
Geese not your thing? (Whateverrrr!) Check out this balloon mobile. The animal figures come out! Another brillant decorative/play addition to any kid's room. The stork is great too!

Kristian Vedel chair - a piece of design history

This children's chair was designed in Denmark, back in the Fifties: it's now been recreated for today's kids to enjoy. Cleverly, it requires no screws or nails to hold it together, thus meeting the safety standards of even the most fretful parents.
With its curved lines and coloured highlights, it looks good too. The only downside, as always when it comes to classic reproductions, is the price label. Let me sum that up in two words: not cheap. It may be time to start exploring the yard sales of Denmark...

Babygadget not enough? Try Babiekins, too

Goodness knows we try to bring you as many posts on kids' design as we can, but even we would admit that we can't offer coverage of everything. So, for those long moments between Babygadget posts, you may be glad to peruse the online Babiekins magazine.
Styling itself as "for the trendsetting child", the publication brings together several inspirational contributers, mostly parents themselves. Fashion and interiors are interspersed with ideas for things to do with kids and some stunning photography. The Moomins interiors spreads are a particular highlight.
The whole publication is visually beautiful, and it just goes on and on, with something to catch your attention on every page. Babiekins, we salute you.

Solar powered night lights from Clifford Richards

In March 2008 we featured the gorgeous paper sculptures of old-school designer/illustrator Clifford Richards.
A friend recently drew my attention towards these solar-powered animal nightlights, and it was a delight to realise that the assured and somehow jolly shapes come from the same designer's hand. In powder-coated steel, these should last an entire childhood, and quite possibly beyond.

Belle and Boo

If you have fond memories of picturebooks from your childhood - or even those passed on from your parents' childhoods - then you'll love the illustrational prints of Belle and Boo, created by Mandy Sutcliffe.
Somehow reminiscent of the Little Grey Rabbit and its ilk, the world Sutcliffe creates shows small children with bobbed hair and vintage style clothing. The images are available on art prints, cushions - and, if you really wish to embrace the look - clothing up to age 4. Goodness, I wish I had found this before my own daughter turned 4.

Rockid

We all know how difficult it is to transfer a just-fallen-asleep baby from your arms to its cradle. Well, maybe that'd be easier if the cradle were right there by your side. That's the concept behind the Rockid.
Here at Babygadget, we appreciate furniture that grows with your offspring. Apparently, once your kid has outgrown the crib section, the Rockid can be transformed into one big rocking chair, which looks like it ought to have room for at least one adult and child to sit companionably side by side. All good.

Hasenpfeffer's custom recycled dolls

They're not cheap (sample price, US $104.25) but they sure are awesome. At Hassenpfeffer's Etsy store, you can get a doll custom-made to any specifications. You might get one made in your child's own image, or a best friend, or simply dictate favourite colours for clothing and hair.
Best of all, everything is recycled, strongly made and has amazing attention to detail.

Birdhouse wallpaper

I defy you to chance upon this gorgeous birdhouse wallpaper from Souk Shop, and not immediately get They Might be Giants stuck in your head.
Would the effect eventually wear off if you decorated your kid's room with this design? Maybe not - but hey, there are worse earworms to suffer from, and this wallpaper? Totally worth it.

Doodles for Dinner placemats

Times sure have changed from when my parents used to tell me not to play with my food: these days, there are endless products to encourage kids to muck about, not only with their meals, but with the table settings too.
At least Doodles for Dinner brings out junior's artistic side, and, well, if you're not keen on the whole 'drawing at the dinner table' thing, it might be nice to keep for those special occasions like restaurant meals, when you just need a few moments' peace and quiet.
