Bumbo Baby Seat

bumbo-seat-lime.jpg
Here's a different take on an infant chair in case you haven't heard about it. The Bumbo Baby Seat was designed to accomodate a baby's posture to sit straight up as soon as head control is mastered. And, appropriate for the Pilates age we live in, the Bumbo also helps babies develop "core" strength necessary to eventually allow them to sit up on their own. How does this seat work? It is designed so that a baby's own body weight holds him/her down and in place without the need of belts or straps. Scary? Not really. The Bumbo Seat puts a baby's bum a bit below the leg openings so there's no way your little one will fall out. Additional front support keeps a baby from sliding forward. Of course, never leave baby alone in the Bumbo and it's best to put the seat on the floor. Made out of foam, lightweight, easy to clean and award-winning, it is considered a medical device in Illinois and recommeded by pediatricians, orthopedists, physical therapists and, best of all, satisfied parents. I'll take one in lime for my baby.

We have one of these, and it's so much fun. She looks like she just landed in a UFO. Not sure how much fun it is for baby, but she tolerates the silliness we can afford.

I have the knock-off version of the Bumbo: the BebePod. I love it so far and we use it all the time in place of a high chair. It really is best on the ground though because our child is especially wiggly.

We got a Bumbo for our little one when she was about 4 mos old. She found it OK as well for sometime especially when I sat her in front of the mirror. However, the joy was fairly short-lived and she wouldn't sit in it after a month or so. Now at 13 mos, she's again playing with the Bumbo by stuffing herself into it and toppling out for fun!

A word of caution though - the position of the legs evidently causes more gaps than usual in the diaper around the leg as we found out via a massive blow-out at a friend's house for dinner :-)

Our daughter loves her Bumbo - hers is teal blue - she started using it at 2 months old, when she could balance her own head well.

We cart ours in and out of daycare and into restaurants - it's a great booster seat. We also use it as a high chair on the dining table and everywhere else. We never leave her unattended, but she sits so securely that we don't worry about putting her on surfaces in it.

It's waterproof and easy to wipe clean - which makes it ideal for feeding time! Plus, it comes in an array of 70's high fashion colors and its molded foam UFO look gets comments from everyone.

PS - recently saw one for sale at Target.
