Esthex

The first time I saw one of the Esthex hanging music boxes at a friend's house I was immediately taken by the bright orange heavyweight felt and the simplistic graphic shapes that make up the monkey's face. It seemed like the perfect thing to keep a baby's visual and aural interest.

I wanted to check out other Esthex products and expecting the same graphic sensibility, was a bit surprised at how whimsical some of the other plush animals and dolls were with colorful stitching and contrasting patterns. The artist, Esther Schuivens, designed and constructed these dolls with her childhood drawings in mind. Basic shapes make up the eyes, legs and bodies, and this interpretation of childhood innocence results in strange proportions and humoristic creatures.

Check out the whole collection on the Esthex website.
The felt music box can be bought at Romp in brooklyn.
