The Birthday Caterpillar: when candles on the cake just don't cut it anymore

I'm not sure at what point I stopped getting excited about birthdays, but having kids around means you get a second chance to get excited about the years rolling around. Every child loves getting a year older, and while candles on a cake are an old tradition, once they're blown out and the cake is eaten, what's left? The Birthday Caterpillar is a great display of how old your child is, and it will be around all year. Light a candle on their birthday or any special event, or simply use it as a toy. You add a link for each new year, and the caterpillar is completed on the sixth birthday.
This is a great, lasting way for your children to keep track of their age, and they'll love putting on each new segment on their birthday. Even better is the finished keepsake when it's completed. I'm just glad they stop at six, I wouldn't want to keep adding sections to the caterpillar. That would get depressing in one's middle age.
