First 1000 Days baby journal

first1000days_med.jpg

My mother kept baby journals for me and my brother, and although they were your standard albums -- pink for me, blue for Alejandro -- I did get a kick out of reading mine when I first stumbled upon it. I especially liked knowing things about my life as a baby that were specific to the times (1970) and what my parents, as young graduate students from Central America in Northern California, did with me. This baby journal from Olympia, designed by Washington artist Nikki McClure, takes typical journals to a whole new level for today’s parents looking for original products that appeal to modern sensibilities. I love the design and, like Taro Gomi's Scribbles coloring book, the journal has really well thought out titles for the pages to be filled out (the first bird baby sees, first jump into a mud puddle), focusing on baby’s interaction with nature. Poetic and intimate, the journal is a testament to Nikki’s unique abilities as an illustrator and mother.
