Kalon Studios

Sustainability and green are 2 buzzwords that you'll hear a lot of these days, and rightly so, but when a design company such as Kalon Studios can bring you pieces that are both beautiful and innovative in its sustainable methods of manufacturing (their furniture is finished with a non toxic oil that they've developed that's actually food grade) you have to admire the company's commitment.

There's a certain poetic gracefulness in the way the curves and geometric lines coexist in their furniture. Two pieces for children include a crib and a changing trunk, both of which can grow with your child as they change into toddler bed and toy chest/reading bench. Both come in soothing colors painted on birch, or oiled bamboo which is gorgeous. I'm drawn to the changing trunk in particular - especially with the botanical drawings on the surface - as I'm interested in children's furniture that can transform into pieces that can adapt to other rooms later on.

Kalon Studios is a husband/wife team of Michaele Simmering (who emailed me about their collection - thank you!) and Johannes Pauwen. Not surprising, their daughter is the inspiration behind their children's line.
