Entertaining Elephants

IMG_0821_2_2.jpg

By now anyone paying close attention to Babygadget, knows a few things about our writers. Some are obsessed with rockets; others - play food; a couple - felt; and many of us -orange. My thing: elephants. And look, here's a whole store named after them, Entertaining Elephants. (Actually it's named after Maurice Sendak's awesome alphabet book "Alligators All Around" - no extra charge for two recommendations in one post.)

Five years ago in Hollywood, Entertaining Elephants started making these adorable baby clothes discretely embroidered with a mini elephant. Though available in many different hues, their fall selections are pictured above. Since then EE has expanded their line to include girls dresses crafted from vintage pillowcases and boys pants from men's shirts, as well as other fun fashion. Entertaining Elephants loves all things natural - from wild colors, to natural fibers and materials - and celebrates our diverse planet with a vivid selection of ethnic goods. The results are a bit like nature herself: a festive expression of color - bold, beautiful and full of life. In keeping with this theme, EE goods are procured from ecologically and ethically viable sources. And yet another thing to celebrate: their summer sale - 40% off!

Every Bag has a Pink Lining

Pink Lining

It's an old story: I'd never heard of Pink Lining until I researched them for Babygadget, and then yesterday I saw one of their bags in town, hanging from the handles of a Bugaboo. Which tells you just one thing, I suppose: that they are instantly recognisable.

The clue to their defining characteristic is in the name: every one of the range (which takes in handbags, travel bags and washbags as well as nappy bags) has a shocking pink lining. But of course, this is not visible from the outside - what enabled me to be so certain I had seen one was that husband and wife Charlotte and Rufus Pearl's design aesthetic is pretty distinctive too.

To be honest I am not sure I completely like it; also, do the little buttons and bows and that pink lining mean these are only for mummies? However, I do bow down in the face of the range's practicality, which accounts for the inclusion of features such as outer compartments, waterproof 'wet zones', and integral changing mats. Since these bags clock in at the higher-middle price point, that's what makes them worth your consideration.

Primigi Lullaby Collection

primigi_lullaby.jpg

Baby shoes are not exactly my forte.... I mean when babies are tiny, their feet just don't look like feet quite yet and of course they aren't exactly functional. Having had the experience of stuffing those new little feet into a pair of shoes, I know how babies feel about shoes. But I have to say, these shoes from Primigi look really comfy. According to the website these shoes are "the Ferrari of children’s shoes". Italian leather baby shoes for $35 - can you beat that?

Yes! Super Baby: stimulation at feeding time

yes baby shirt

Now you need not worry that your baby is getting enough stimulation, even when he's feeding! By simply slipping on the Yes! Super Baby shirt, you create a zone of visual stimulation and activities for baby to engage with while snuggling up or enjoying a drink of milk.

This remarkable shirt contains a discreet hidden layer for those who are breastfeeding, and decoration based on a baby's visual preferences for black and white graphics in the early months, and happy smiling faces as he develops.

If the shirt is a bit too much of a statement for you, you can also purchase a scarf or an armband made to the same principles.

I've shared this link with a few of my Mum friends, and their opinions were unanimous. I won't tell you what they thought though - I want to hear your opinions, please!

A new modern nursery line from Westwood Design

westwoodpacific.jpg

I got an email yesterday from Westwood Design about their new modern nursery line called Pacific which will be debuting at the ABC kids' show in Vegas. We're not going to the show so we won't be able to see the furniture in person, but it looks like a beauty. I've been really liking the dark wood/white combination in furniture these days so it caught my eye immediately. Westwood Design creates pretty traditional nursery furniture so this new contemporary line is a bit of a departure, but I bet will garner a lot of interest. For one, it is rather reasonably priced compared to many modern lines out there (crib will be $599) and it also converts to a platform bed for either twin and full size mattresses. I'm interested in the conversion so hopefully more details to come soon.

I'm Not Cute!

owl%20book.jpg
Any child who hates to be cuddled and cooed over by grown-ups will likely identify with Jonathan Allen's "I'm Not Cute!". The baby owl struggles to convince the public that he is not just a cute face as he grows increasingly annoyed that other animals keep hugging him and telling him just how cute he is. And the little owl plush that you can get with the book is just, well.... cute.

The Buggy Brolly - takes care of you for once

buggybrolly.jpg

Cosytoes? Check. Raincover? Check. Head support, foot support, fully reclining backrest? Check, check, check. Yes, the designers of pushchairs make certain that your precious child is comfortable in any weather - but the time comes when you have to ask yourself, what about me?

After all, I'm the one trudging up the hill, pushing the combined weight of shopping, baby and buggy against whatever the weather has thrown at us today. My daughter? Happy in her little raincover-bubble, watching the raindrops trickle against the plastic, humming a happy song. As for me, I'm very far from singing a happy song, I can tell you.

So thank heavens that someone has finally come up with what ought to be fitted as standard on all pushchairs - the Buggy Brolly (also works as a parasol for when the sun is beating down). Now if someone could just work on a big cosy-toes for me, I'll be happy.

Buon Appetito duvet cover for the expectant mom

full2_300.jpg

All of us who have been pregnant know that there is nothing more comforting than eating our little hearts out in the warmth of our beds during that never-ending, last trimester. For the birth of my firstborn, I went into labor this way, watching an old Frasier episode while eating peanut butter on whole wheat toast at one in the morning. Kidsmodern stocks this duvet cover to enable this type of, how shall I put it, relaxation and lists it in the maternity section of its website. So I thought I'd post it here as something fun and useful for the expectant mom.

Storm Trooper Onsie - Get out of the dark side of Star Wars fashion

Picture%20003.jpg

Yep, I'm a Star Wars geek. Even today it remains one of my favorite films. Not because it was the best, but because very few movie-going experiences have ever matched the shear, dare I say, force of seeing Star Wars for the first time. It was awesome.

But I've never been so blinded by my love of Luke-et-al, that I ever considered Star Wars-wear to be even remotely fashionable. But this onsie by Iris Baby is not your average Star Wars shirt. Hand-crafted by Iris Sanchez, with its abstracted pattern delicately embroidered in soft pastels, it looks like it would be more at home with Martha Stewart than George Lucas! In mean it's downright tasteful. Plus I love the obvious humor of it. Now instead of looking like a goober, you can appear clever, with this subtle, almost self-deprecating nod, to your nerdy past. As if to say, "Yes I love Star Wars cause I'm in touch with the child I once was. But look how far I've come."

Ok, ok. If you still don't get it, Iris Baby has some other wonderful tees and onsies as well.

Kaboost portable chair booster

picture_3.png

This is THE solution to all my woes when trying to sit my youngest child in a chair. She refuses to sit in any type of baby-alluding contraption. No high chairs for her and all hell breaks loose when I strap her into her car seat. In any case, the Kaboost is a brilliant solution, fits most four legged chairs and is portable too. Now she'll be able to sit in a chair (she really does think she's twenty five instead of two-and-a-half) like the rest of us. I'll still worry a bit about her falling over--but I know she'd get the hang of it, loving the fact that she could act like her older siblings or a grown-up. The Kaboost comes in three color choices and has several cool features including the fact that it can be adjusted to two height positions and stays attached even when the chair it holds is moved.
