Happy Halloween

It's been feeling more like Fall these days, but I don't think anyone's complaining about the unusually mild day we're having today in NYC (the 3rd mild Halloween in a row actually). The kids get to walk around in their costumes without jackets and cold weather accessories that just muck up the effect of the costume, and parents don't have to freeze their assess off while accompanying kids to the many Halloween activities that are scheduled. We walked our usual route to school today here in the Slope and saw lots of kids in costume (and some adults too, very nice) doing the same.
The kid? She's a purple crayon 'cause that's her favorite color and that way the baby can be Harold and all I have to do is put some footie jammies on her and we're done. I'm not quite ready to deal with 2 costumes yet and be creative. I actually had a bit of free time the last few weeks and so I went out and made her costume out of really nice thick wool felt, carefully appliqueing all the graphic pieces onto the purple shift dress. Yeah, I know, she does look a bit like an ad for Crayola (and if I have to explain to her what Crayola means one more time I'll go mad), but it came out pretty good. She's got a pointy hat for the top, stuffed with batting so that it's nice and pointed. It's cute watching her go around the house trying to "draw" on things with her head.
So hope you and your kids have a happy one. Be safe. Don't eat too much candy.

Paul Frank Furniture

Don't you just love it when your fashion favorites branch out into furniture and home goods? Usually it's just more of a good thing. Therefore I was really excited when cherished kid's clothier, Small Paul, sent over press and picts of their new line of "hard-wear." And I'm happy to report that it does not disappoint.
The result of a collaboration between Paul Frank and renowned children's designer Eric Pfeiffer of 10 Grain Studio, the collection includes a chair, desk, doll house that doubles as a table, step stool, ride on, and one-or-two person rocker. Crafted from sturdy, molded plywood and embellished with Frank's signature prints, the line successfully continues Frank's penchant for creating modern classics with retro flare. Contact Paul Frank for distributors in your area.

Float about - in a cloud onesie

Yeah, it's a floaty sort of life being a baby after all: carried from one place to another, drifting off to dreamland several times a day, only to wake up somewhere quite different. There's no harm in celebrating the fact rather than denying it, with this gorgeous cloud all-in-one from Danish site Harmonie Barn, where it comes in at approximately US$ 48. Loving that Seventies design vibe, too.

Wee Sticker

It's no secret that I love play food - plush, wooden, felt, even plastic. Here's a little wee potsticker for your collection, just as cute as this little dumpling.

Felt Cafe Booties

If today's weather in NYC was any indication, winter is upon us. Yippee! Finally time to start shopping for cozy woolens. For baby I found these utterly irresistible booties from Felt Cafe. Handed felted from 100% organic, hand dyed, merino wool, their only adornment is a simple wooden button with loop fasten. I love the totally natural form. It makes them very innocent and sweet, just like baby.

Nume Rocking Chair

A rocking chair is one of those quintessential baby items that all parents, or grandparents see as a necessary addition to baby gear. In our family, you get your one child rocking chair with the first child, then each subsequent sibling inherits the chair. This guarantees the chair heirloom status, and a future custody battle - think Ezra Pound's Peter's Chair . I think that this rocking chair from Nume looks like a fantastic candidate for the position of coveted chair.

Habitat Storyland bookshelf

I love London-based Habitat; they've got some really nice kid products that are worth a look, like this stackable storyland laquered bookshelf. The info is sparse on the site, but one can assume that the unit comes with multiple pieces to fit your needs for various configurations.
Check it out here.

Dwell comes to the UK

Ever since I started writing for Babygadget, I've gnashed my teeth and envied the beautiful stuff from Dwellbaby that is regularly covered here.
That's why a recent email from Lulu Sapphire, a British site which always seems to have the very nicest products, gladdened my heart. Finally, Dwellbaby bedding is available in the UK.
It seems that parents up and down the country are equally keen to snaffle up a bit of this designer linen. There's been a waiting list since August, and customers are currently being exhorted to keep their pre-orders to one set per family. And that's despite the cool price tag of £110, perhaps twice what you'd pay for a standard bedding set from a high street shop. So if you want a piece of the action, you'd better get your name on that list.

Muji in New York...finally!

How dorky am I that I'll be one in a crowd of people waiting in line at the new Muji store when it opens its doors November 16 at noon? I haven't been this excited about a store since, well, I don't think EVER. My vow to be more budget-conscious in November has gone to the crapper because of this, but I guess I do need to start buying Christmas presents after all. Muji for everyone! In addition to housewares and little toys for the kids, I'm excited about the clothes - basics, but well made. Chefdad picked up a couple of t-shirts at the Muji store in London almost 5 years ago and they are still holding up remarkably well. Let's hope that the quality hasn't changed.

A magnetic village

The shapes and colours of this little magnet set just caught my eye; so much nicer to have wooden magnets than the ubiquitous plastic. With plenty of scope for story-telling and rearranging, this could keep your kids quiet at the fridge door while you're cooking, in which case, it's well worth the price tag of ten pounds.
