SDI Fantasia

I can't figure out much about this Japanese line of children's furniture (the Google translator was worthless), but I know I like it - a lot. The combination of natural wood construction, graceful forms, and bold colors = perfect. Plus they're versatile. The Carota chair adjusts from high to low and the Bambini high chair flips over to become a rocking horse (like thing). The abstract ride-on and adorable table and chair set are equally fabulous.

Via imedagoze - a great design blog. Check it out, if you haven't.

Here's a bit about the company, from my own quick translation:

About SDI Fantasia

When children are in their youth, we want to give them things of functional beauty. We make such things because we want to help you cultivate your children’s excitement and emotional learning.

With this thought, we created the “SDI Fantasia” series of children’s furniture. Designer Toshimitsu Sasaki founded the company because he wanted to make furniture for his own children. The unique “Bambini” chair evokes and symbolizes the designer’s feeling.

“The design that the user likes is a realistic design” is the founding principle of SDI Fantasia. As with the first furniture--the Bambini high chair that converts to a rocking horse--all items adjust to the child’s height, and they all reduce the use of formaldehyde in paint and other construction material. The design considers not just the beauty of weaving together curved and straight lines, it also includes safety and the feel of the furniture. The concept is: The furniture we want our own children to use is furniture that can be used by all children.

“How much power is in a thing?”
Designer Toshimitsu Sasaki always kept that in mind as he started the company 30 years ago. With the simple thought that design equals life, he continued to make furniture that reflected Japanese life. During the process, he used the “makeshift” style of design and materials that he used for his own children.

He thought, “Isn’t it too slow to wait for adulthood to have functional beauty and good design?”

“Doesn’t well-designed furniture from the time of childhood remain in the memory after years of use? Isn’t it useful for cultivating a sentiment for good design in the child?”

This brand concept drives SDI Fantasia as we keep sending out children’s furniture.

The company (Sasaki Design International) is based in Tokyo and has a showroom there. It was founded in 2004.

And about the chair:
“Thirty years ago, the designer Sasaki built the “New Bambini” chair for his own child. It converts from a high chair to a wooden rocking horse. The chair has been modified by engineers without losing the spirit of the original prototype.”

Wow, Larry. Thank you! That's very thorough and much more comprehensible than Google.

I am curious what the Carota chair is named after. As you can see, my last name is Carota.

Sincerely,
Vince
