between 60-100 beats per minute on average
Posted by: Craig Wilson | November 2, 2007 10:49 AM
A heart rate anywhere from 40 to 180 can be quite normal. The average is 60-80.
Posted by: Cathy | November 2, 2007 10:58 AM
The heartbeat, naturally, is by no means constant. The rate can vary from minute to minute, depending on stress and body temperature. In one famous, if rather grisly, experiment, a team of researchers in Utah in 1939 took an electrocardiogram of a man about to be executed by a firing squad. His heartbeat increased from 72 to 180 just before the shots were fired. Afterward, of course, the rate dropped sharply.
A rate of 72 to 80 beats per minute is generally considered normal for a healthy human being at rest. At birth, the rate is in the neighborhood of 130 beats per minute, with the figure decreasing through adolescence and then showing a slight upswing in old age.

I love this stuff. My daughter, who says she's scared of skeletons, maintains that there is no skeleton in her body, merely "2 angry ghosties." Not sure where she got that one...
Anyway, your question is a bit ambiguous. Wiki says:
When resting, the average adult human heart beats at about 70 bpm (males) and 75 bpm (females); however, this rate varies among people and can be significantly lower in athletes. The infant/neonatal rate of heartbeat is around 130-150 bpm, the toddler's about 100–130 bpm, the older child's about 90–110 bpm, and the adolescent's about 80–100 bpm.

It depends on age, etc, but for an adult 60-100 beats per minute. Thanks!!

According to I heart guts, the average heart beats around 100,000 times per DAY. The number of times the heart beats per minute, or pulserate, varies depending on age, fitness level, activity, stress, and other factors. Normal pulserate for an adult is usually between 60-80 beats per minute.

And same 4-year-old had an argument with the Dr. as to whether the spleen was part of the digestive system or not.
I know it's random, but pick us anyway.....

72 to 80 bpm.
For me, however, I'm thinking it might be less. My son arrives in February and I've never felt so relaxed. Interesting, because I’ve always been a worrier (we could also call this an overactive imagination) but as soon as I found out I was pregnant, it stopped. Maybe that was because I knew whatever emotional insanity I put myself through would also be experienced by my kid, but also, moreover, because I realized that nothing was as big of a deal anymore. He was the biggest of deals. There was no point in getting all crazy about a broken traffic light, or a late paper, or a misunderstood conversation when this little human being would be hanging out with me for the rest of my life. It was really freeing, actually, a huge relief because I’ve read that women often start worrying more during pregnancy and I felt really lucky to have such an overwhelming sense of calm, of “Nothing else matters, it’s just me and my husband and our kid.” I know I have a lot to learn yet, but right now everything feels so peaceful.
Maybe I'm beating at 65 bpm?

The heart starts at 130 BPM when you are born, goes to 150 BPM by three months, then steadily tapers off to between 60-100 BPM when you become an adult (age 13+).
Considering I've got a chronic kidney disease, I'm hoping to at least get a plushy replacement!
Posted by: Scott | November 6, 2007 5:30 PM
Well that all depends on how old you are... newborns 130 beats per min.. adults 72 to 80 beats per minute. :)

Posted by: Becky | November 6, 2007 10:48 PM
Between 60 - 100 BPM for adults, but when you're a fetus, that's a whole 'nother story. If you're a boy, it's probably 120 or less, if you're a girl, it's probably around 120 or more. So they say.
Posted by: Emily | November 6, 2007 11:46 PM
Well, like anything human, "normal" is kind of a nebulous term. The conventional standard heart rate for a healthy adult is about 70 beats per minute (BPM), but in the absence of any known disease or suspicion of disease, one probably wouldn't be very worried if the HR was a bit higher than that. (80 BPM is not a big deal, for example, but 100 BPM probably is.) Furthermore, trained athletes (particularly distance runners and swimmers) tend to have very low resting heart rates, occasionally tipping below 60 BPM. They're still pushing enough blood through their bodies to stay alive; it's just that their hearts are efficient and strong enough to do that with fewer strokes per minute. Don't forget that children have faster heart rates than adults, and in utero heart rates are well into the triple digits.
....But anyway, I guess if you're looking for a one-word answer, that answer would be "70." :-)

an average human heart beats 60-100 times per minute...however, an average mouse heart beats approximately 700 times per minute
Posted by: jessica | November 7, 2007 4:42 PM
Number of beats per minute is dependent on gender, age, current activity and overall cardiovascular health.
As a physically active adult female, I have a resting heart rate of 48 BPM.
If you're looking for a maximum heart rate average, one can use the following formula:
226 - your age for women or 220 - your age for men

However,
Normal resting heart rates ranges 40 to 100 beats per minute.
