Hipster parenting goes too far: the toddler leisure suit

We all want to dress our precious children in beautiful and pleasing clothes, but you must have also noticed the trend towards using your kid as a kind of billboard to advertise your great sense of humour. Thus, the endless choice of onesies and t-shirts with their knowing slogans. Thus, the way that almost every baby accoutrement from bottles to lullaby music is available in a punk version. Thus, indeed, this toddler leisure suit, allowing parents to hark back to the Seventies with a louche reference to programmes such as Starsky and Hutch or movies such as Saturday Night Fever.
Meh, I don't know. For me, this is a step too far. Let toddlers climb, crawl, grub about, without having to make a statement about their parents' sense of irony. He won't 'get' it, and neither will his peers, so to my mind this is really just a grown-up's indulgence. Am I wrong?

I think there's a fine line between parents' style preferences and dressing kids in such a way that they're able to simply be kids. Everyone infuses a bit of their personality into the choices made when dressing their children. I guess the tricky part is knowing when to say when.

it really isn't any different than putting your kids in ducks or trains or generic sports phrases ("superstar!") or other old lady fashion themes. it's all the same thing. the kid doesn't care either way.

Oh boy. This suit would only be appropriate as a Halloween costume, in my book. Of course, it's not as bad as the little boy I saw wearing a hat that said "Mo-Fo" the other day. It's the "nickname" of a lawfirm in NYC, but still...just wrong on a 1 yr old.
