This little piggy's playhouse

There's a new eco-friendly cardboard playhouse on the block! Manufactured from 100% recyclable materials in the Bay Area and designed by a group of architects and designers, this Little Playhouse is constructed from sturdy 275 pound corrugated cardboard and comes in kraft or white. 5% of proceeds goes to charities that feed hungry children.

Bridget Fidget: retro style; modern book

We've been enjoying Bridget Fidget by Joe Berger as a bedtime story just recently in our house. It's one of those rare books where a child can enjoy the story, while the adult can take in the finer subtleties of the illustrational style - which in this case owes a big debt to the groovy colourways and designs of the fifties.
Those who read British newspaper the Guardian may be interested to know that Berger honed his style, in part, during the weekly strip The Pitchers, featuring a couple of wannabe writers fabricating ever-more ludicrous ideas in the hope of getting commissioned. Some of that ludicrousness is evident in Bridget Fidget: in the world of children's picturebooks, of course, that's a welcome thing.

Kate's Moss Hat

There's something in New York called a "Barney's hat." It is a cap from synonymous store that's so outrageous that only the most fashion forward dare to done them. You know, the kind of hat that Carrie Bradshaw would wear. The Kate's Moss Hat (Get the pun?) is definitely the kid equivalent. It's uniquely stylish, bold, and flirty, with a good deal of fun. Something most adults wouldn't be caught dead in, it's just the kind of fashion statement that kids can pull off.
If green is not your thing, try "petal power" pink.

A-Z, on canvas

This A-Z canvas is one of the better-looking ones I've seen. The pictures are appealing, and there's lots of scope for making up stories, discussing other images you might draw instead, or spelling words out.
£68.50 from Urchin in the UK: if that seems rather too much, you might consider the smaller version, £51.86.

Retro Revolution beaker: ring the early days changes

Some parents enjoy having baby accessories that stand out just a little from the pack: nothing wrong with that, because goodness knows, there is enough that is repetitive and samey about the early months of parenthood.
Add to your collection, and bring a little pattern to your day with the Retro Revolution beaker, just £7.29 from Nordic Kids.

Animal Friends Cutlery by Gense

I like the idea of having a special set of cutlery for the kids. Utensils that they can use as their own, in size-appropriate proportions. This set, designed by Swedish designer Gense, is fun and features friendly animal faces to keep your kids company during mealtimes.
Available at Huset.

BRIO stacking owl

Continuing their quiet rebellion against the usual brash colour palettes of toy designers, BRIO present this stacking owl (and its companion penguin).
As with all BRIO toys, you only have to look at the picture to see how satisfyingly the heavy smooth wood will sit in the hand, and how nicely the parts will fit together. A classic toy for the babies on your shopping list this holiday-time.

Habitat light table

What you see here is what is billed on the Habitat website as a "kids' light table" - no further explanation given.
Well, it's a table, and it lights up. What I'd like to know is whether it is supposed to function like a designer's light table, too. I guess, if your child was to put a picture on top, he or she could trace over it, thus opening up a world of illustrative possibilities (as well as giving them a head start in the graphic design industries).
That aside, attractive though it is, it looks kind of frangible. One for the older, sensible child, I think.

Sleepyheads pillow case

This cute pillowcase from Twisted Twee shows junior just where his head should be at bedtime - and there's a place for Teddy, too. Just £15 could save you a lot of repeated instructions, and if not, well, it looks good too.
