Frazier & Wing Wall Art

We've written about the beautiful mobiles of Frazier & Wing when they were first introduced 2 years ago, but now the company also creates these ethereal, one-of-a-kind wall art pieces. Made of paper, beads, pearls, found birch branches, each one is made to order and handmade by Heather Frazier.

Witty Works by Walking to Jericho

I really love these unconventional prints by Fiona of Walking to Jericho. Slightly sepia, black and white polariods paired with bold letters and numbers create a richly textured, surprising, and subtly witty piece of art. I think they would looked great grouped on a nursery wall.

Eiry Rock - pivoting chair

The work of Eiry Rock is not exactly mainstream. I'm not sure if I'd actually want any of the pieces, but you can't deny that at least they're interesting, visually and conceptually.
This pivoting chair, for example, is supposed to provide seating for an adult and a child. The interplay between the large and the small seat is certainly novel, and no doubt most children would gain some fun from figuring out how it worked.
At the same time, though, I cant help thinking that it imposes a strangely regimented arrangement, which doesn't reflect how adults and children truly interact with one another. Perhaps it would work in a theatre, where people do sit with their kids in rows? Hmm.
You'll find other similarly conceptual pieces on the website.

Where's M?

Remember the alphabet rug that was missing a 'z' - possibly? Well, here's its companion piece: the alphabet poster that's missing an image for 'M'. Only here, the answer is clearer: if you look very closely, you'll see there *is* an M...right where he should be, between the L and the N.
From Famille Summerbelle, whose work we've admired before.

Market Sling

Something about the combination of my damaged dancer back and my gianormous children means that, in my opinion, there really is no comfortable way to "wear" your child. But there are less uncomfortable ways, and the sling is one of them. But then design wise you often run into the problem of their being either too "crunchy" or too trendy (you know, like with big pink dots or turquoise paisleys). So what's a more classically contemporary Mom with a sturdy back to do? Get the Market Sling. It's lovely - interesting, yet understated - stylish, and it goes with everything! Plus the organic cotton interior makes it extra cozy for baby. (I guess their comfort is to be considered too...)

Felted Animal Necklace from Motley Mutton

Are these not just the cutest things you've EVER seen?! I mean, I almost hesitate to put them in a design blog because something with a Awwwwwww-factor this high can't be hip and mod. Right? Well they are made of felt. Handmade actually, by Nancy Bevins who runs a sheep farm in West Virginia. Twelve years ago she started needle felting these irresistible creatures as a means of dealing with a growing pile of wool, and thus Motley Mutton was born. Now she's created a whole menagerie of furred, feathered, and scaly friends from woodland animals to those of the African plain or jungle. (Be sure to peruse past orders if you don't see your favorite fauna, because she does take custom orders.) Perfectly perched on natural leather chain, each unique critter has his own lovable personality. I just think they are beyond charming, adorable and precious, and I can't imagine what child would not love to have a necklace "pet" of his very own to take with him where ever he goes.

Flowery cabinet

I may still be reeling from assembling the many, many parts of Vertbaudet's chest of drawers back in Feb '08, but that didn't stop this pretty cabinet catching my eyes. With its wistful pattern, it's not quite the clean designer piece Babygadget readers will be used to us highlighting, but there's something about it I like.

Plush clothing & accessories

I love the aesthetic style over at Plush, a new children's clothing and accessory brand, which features soft basic tees and hoodies, adorned with the simple felt shapes that create the most whimsical of creatures. Check them out.

Build yourself a Xoddo

Whoever's behind Xoddo has some pretty modern-day marketing up their sleeve. Alerted by an ad at the top of my gMail, I clicked through to find a website utilising every crumb of web 2.0 sales savvy known to man - and to great effect. Read the blog, browse the picture galleries, then sign up and start designing - that's the idea.
Xoddos are soft toys you custom-build online. Are they monsters or friendly creatures? To an extent, that's up to you and the features you choose. There's almost an infinite number of possible configurations, meaning that you could well be designing a unique creature, but for inspiration, you can visit the Picasa photo gallery showing other people's finished work.
One aspect that parents will appreciate is that, although you have to register, there's no compulsion to buy. You can design as many creatures as you like, and print them out, and never have to shell out for the real thing. But if you do, you may wish to know that prices begin at $18.00.

Cloth Tea Set from Nifty Kid's Stuff

My three year old son is really into "serving me tea" (jelly bean flavor is his favorite) with what he's manage to cobble together as a "tea set." Time I invested in the real thing I guess - real tea set, that is, not real tea. But since I do a have a typical boy, ceramic is out of the question, and of course from my point of view plastic is too. The solution? Cloth! I quite like these rather bold sets from Nifty Kid's Stuff. Each piece, including tea pot, 2 cups, saucers, napkins, and cupcakes, is completely hand sewn or, in the case of the cupcakes, hand knit. And no two sets are exactly alike. Sweet!
