Flower power frocks from Little Overcoat

LO1.jpg

Psychedelic patchwork is not usually my bag, but I'm kinda digging the retro groove of Little Overcoat. Inspired by the tale of a little old man who repurposes a worn out coat into a vest, then tie, and so on, Little Overcoat's clothes are handmade from as much recycled material as possible, plus a few new European extras. The result is a veritable explosion of color, as flower power patterns are paired with witty slogans and vintage icons. Not for the faint of heart, these funky frocks are definitely for those who are a little more "free" with their styling.

Michelle Mason cut-out rugs

cutoutblack_rug.jpg

I never would have thought of designing rugs with holes in them, and I fear that in all but the most scrupulous of households, lifting one up would reveal a neat pattern of biscuit-crumbs and dust. For decorative purposes, though, I have to say I like the cut of Michelle Mason's jib.

The rugs come in a more sombre choice of colours for adults, too, and while you're on her site, check out the bright lampshades and cushions, which also straddle that difficult divide between what kids like and what adults will enjoy.

Tiny dollshouse project

paper cut-out dollshouse

Just A5 in size, so definitely a project for little fingers, this cut-out paper dollshouse is adorable. And surely, too, perfect for those occasions when 'just a card' isn't enough, but a proper gift is too much.

At only £4.00, and made from recycled card, it's fine to toss into your own recycling when it gets old. From The Green Apple.

Lauren Moriarty lampshades

Seascape-glow-lamp

If you have one of those children who likes to obsessively compile and compare facts, or perhaps just a general shark-o-phile, the Seascape Glow lamp by Lauren Moriarty would be a great bedtime choice.

A number of deep-sea creatures wend their way around the lamp; facts are given about the size of each. Best of all, though, is that they are printed in phosphorescent ink, causing them to glow for several hours after switching on the lamp charges them up. What a super way to be calmed to sleep.

Budding architects may prefer the London skyline lamp, below, which uses similar technologies to create the effect of a sunrise over the capital.

Tiny footprint desk

tiny-footprint-desk

Just beautiful - that's the work itself, and the concepts behind the Tiny Footprint Desk by UK designer Naomi Dean.

'Tiny footprint' refers both to its physical size - a boon for the space-strapped household - and to its impact on the environment, which is minimised due to Dean's use of wood reclaimed from old office furniture.

Suitable for kids aged five and up, the desk features a flip-up pinboard and space for a laptop.

MIXKO Butterfly lamp

il_430xN.53624762.jpg

Apologies in advance for my gross stereotyping, but I can't imagine what little girl wouldn't love this graceful butterfly lamp from MIXKO. It's just so delicate and lovely, like gentle swarm of enchanted butterflies just landed in your room. This magical effect is created by artists Nahoko Koyama and Alexander Garnett, who carefully cut each butterfly right from the felted wool base. Unique and beautiful, it's a perfect accent piece for the room of any butterfly enthusiast.

Progressive Desk Kazam

kazam01blancbois_03.jpg

You see before you the Progressive Desk Kazam from Balouga. Like the TrippTrapp seat and the Mobo chair, this is supposed to be a piece of furniture that grows with your child, from babyhood to teenager-dom.

At first, your newly sitting-up baby will use it from floor level; eventually you can adjust the feet and use it with a toddler chair or a full-size seat. The little fixtures at the back? Well, the V-shape is designed to be a bookshelf; the 'E' shape a kind of comic-rack.

I guess I'm not wild about the look of it - not wild enough to want it in my life for the length of time that its brief would imply, anyway. And sometimes the whole 'grow with your child' thing just seems like an excuse to stick a hefty price-label on a thing. I mean, this one's over a grand. You'd want it to be sticking around for life, at that price. But I'd be interested to see it in action. How about you?

Swing with the plants

Swing-with-plants-Droog-Design

It's either the silliest idea ever thought of, or a romantic and novel way to bring a little of the outdoors into your house. You may be spared the burden of having to decide for yourself, for the Swing with plants costs a cool £331 (approx US$477.00).

The seat is filled with soil; you plant anything that will climb, and away you go - plant pot and entertainment, all in one. And you didn't even know you needed one.
